ORLAND PARK— In sports, defense is often the backbone of any great team, like making crucial tackles or a goalline stand or maybe causing a turnover in football. But sometimes, an intense focus on one side of the ball can leave gaps on the other. That’s exactly what Orland Park Pioneers Lightweight Head Coach Dan Kolodziej emphasized after a hard-fought 6-0 loss to the Tinley Bulldogs on September 10 in Orland Park.

One thing Like Bosack (10) has shown the world is that he is an expert finisher. Here he makes the touchdown saving tackle of a Bulldog runner on September 10 in Orland Park

“Our defense has been strong this season,” Kolodziej said following the game. “We shut them down again. We had one lone play where they got to the outside, and we just pinched a little bit.” He continued, “They were strong up front. They brought a lot of pressure; we didn’t have much time to get the ball off. Late in the game, we had our backs against the wall, so we had to start passing it, and they just happened to be in the right spots.”

From the opening snap, the Pioneers’ defense set the tone. Just four minutes into the first quarter, Luke Bosack delivered a critical tackle to prevent a potential Bulldogs touchdown. Moments later, Gavin Garrity followed up with a key stop, capped off by a monstrous hit from Ammar Abdelmuti that forced a punt.

You can almost hear the crunching and cracking in the pileups of Bulldogs and Pioneers during their WNFL game on September 10 in Orland Park.

On offense, the Pioneers showed flashes. Late in the first quarter, Garrity connected with Taylon Morandi on a pass that gained five yards, but consistent progress remained an obstacle.

The second quarter saw more standout defensive moments. Abdelmuti opened with another solid tackle, followed by a powerful stop from Zachariah Ballouata to deny the Bulldogs a first down.

“You have to be ready. As soon as you see the ball move, you hit the backfield and make the tackle,” Ballouata said of his play.

Gavin Garrity (44) is about to let it fly for the Pioneers against their Bulldogs foes on September 10 in WNFL play on September 10 in Orland Park.

Three minutes into the second quarter, Michael Patterson broke through with a game-changing sack.

“Yeah, I just blew through the guard and tackle,” Patterson said. “I saw him coming toward me, so I just tackled him.”

Despite strong defensive efforts, the Pioneers struggled to finish drives. Garrity reflected on the offensive challenges: “I should have waited longer to throw to my teammates. Our blocking is great, but it wasn’t 100%. I think we could run the ball much better.”

The Pioners backfield seemed to be fighting off Bulldogs in the backfield all night as Jordy Kolodziej (81) was here on September 10 in WNFL action in Orland Park.

The defense kept the game scoreless until the final seconds of the first half, when the Bulldogs finally broke through with a 50-yard touchdown run to take a 6-0 lead.

Looking to bounce back in the second half, the Pioneers made an immediate statement. Just two minutes into the third quarter, Garrity recovered a fumble, giving his team another shot on offense.

But despite their relentless defensive stand, with big tackles from Ballouata and Patterson, the Pioneers couldn’t break through the Bulldogs’ defense. As the third quarter ended, the game remained within reach.

Pioneers’Bennett Kersten (39) gets in too deep and over-runs the tackle of the Bulldog runner during their game in WNFL action on September 10 in Orland Park.

The fourth quarter opened with Bosack and Garrity again coming up with key tackles to keep the margin tight.

“I saw their lineup had a fullback and a running back outside. I knew they were going to do a toss sweep, so I just went straight and tackled him,” Garrity said.

As the clock ticked down, the Pioneers kept pushing. Abdelmuti delivered another standout tackle with five minutes left to keep hope alive.

“I just got off the ball really fast, got past them, wrapped around him, and pushed him,” Abdelmuti explained.

Taylan Morandi (7) sprints right looking for running room on his carry against the Tinley Park Bulldogs on September 10 in Orland Park.

Morandi followed with a big defensive play that gave the offense one final opportunity to make something happen.

But a tough combination of turnovers, pass interceptions, and the Bulldogs’ pressure sealed the outcome. The Pioneers walked off the field with a narrow 6-0 loss, a game where their defense shone, but the offense couldn’t find its rhythm.

Despite the defeat, the Pioneers had several key contributors and will look to regroup and refocus ahead of their next matchup.
