Saxons outlast South Elgin for Regional Wrestling Title

Launching its’ IHSA Wrestling State Championship Series, Streamwood High School was one of the host sites of the 2023 3A Regionals.

Among the participant schools were Schaumburg, Conant and South Elgin. Each would be expected to contend for the regional title. When it all played out, the Saxons of Schaumburg with their impressive

Callen Kirchner (L, 33-5) of Schaumburg is focused in his match against Sam Santangelo of Conant. Kirchner won the 120 Regional title with a 10-3 decision.

Schaumburg’s 214-points would outpace South Elgin at 175.5 and Conant at 156.

The Saxons would secure Championships from five of its wrestlers while advancing 12 to the Conant Sectional. Runner-up South Elgin saw four Champions with Conant and Elgin each gaining a pair and Hoffman Estates having one Champion.

South Elgin advanced seven wrestlers to the sectional while Conant and Lake Park will each have six along with Hoffman Estates place five into the sectional.

Rocco Fontela (25-10) of Schaumburg kept the pressure on Anthony Vasquez of South Elgin. Fontela grabbed a fall at 3:33, capturing the 126 Regional Championship.
Andre Rios (23-7) of South Elgin, sinks in a cradle against Cam Whitworth of Conant in the 132 region final. Rios took the title with 14-2 Major decision.
Leo Rosas (32-4)of South Elgin, kept a tight grip on Vince Merola of Lake Park in their 145 Regional final. Rosas later won by fall at 5:57.
South Elgin’s Nico Clinite (37-3) made short work of Schaumburg’s Gavin Hinkle in their 152 Regional final, winning by fall in 42 seconds.

Champions for Schaumburg include Brady Phelps, who remained unbeaten at 34-0, winning at 113-pounds; Callen Kirchner (33-5) at 120-pounds; Rocco Fontela (25-10) at 126-pounds,; Caden Kirchner (35-2) at 152-pounds and Jacob Acevedo (31-8) at 182-pounds.

South Elgin carries to the next portion of the State Series regional titles from Demetrios Carrera (36-1) at 106-pounds; Andre Rios (23-7) at 132-pounds; Leo Rosas (32-4) at 138-pounds and Nico Clinite (37-3) at 145-pounds.

Caden Kirchner (35-2) piled up the points against Julian Bonilla in the 152 title bout. Kirchner went on to win by tech Fall, 15-10 at 5:30 of the third period.
Conant’s Ethan Stiles (L) stayed unbeaten at 25-0 after defeating Logan Meyer of Schaumburg in the 160 bout. Stiles gained a fall at 2:11 for the Regional title.
Elgin’s Fabian Ramirez (18-6) has Streamwood’s Gabe Inorio in deep trouble during the 170 Regional Championship bout. Ramirez gained the fall shortly there after at 1:11 of the first period.
Schaumburgs’ Jacob Acevedo (L, 31-8) eludes the takedown attempt by Josh Taylor of South Elgin in the 182 Championship bout. Acevedo took the 12-8 decision for the Regional title.

Conant and Elgin each had two regional Champions. Conant saw Ethan Stiles also remain unbeaten at 25-0 winning the regional at 160-pounds along with teammate Harley Stary (25-9) winning a title at 220-pounds.

Elgin received regional championships from Fabian Ramirez (18-6) at 170-pounds and Adam Lambaz (27-2) at 285-pounds.

Hoffman Estates’ Josh Ellery (30-6) rounds out the list of regional titlists earning his at 195-pounds.

Harley Stary (top, 25-9) of Conant has his opponent, Abdulhamid Olowu of Hoffman Estates in control during the 220 Regional Championship match. Stary ended the clash in the first period by fall at :58.
Adam Lambaz of Elgin ( L, 27-2), holds tight as Kehinde Akintunde of Hoffman Estates tries to escape. Lambaz gained a Fall at 4:10.

The Final Team Scores are as follows:

1) Schaumburg 214; 2) South Elgin 175.5; 3) Conant 156; 4) Hoffman Estates 105; 5) Lake Park 97; 6) Elgin 73; 7) Streamwood 52; 8) Elgin Larkin 16.
