BARTLETT—
Thursday night wrestling was on the menu for the Bartlett Hawks and the Fenton Bison.
Playing hosts, the Hawks used some home cooking to upend the Bison 47-30.
Both teams featured young squads and at times, showed some inexperience during their bouts.
We have a young team, but I thought we came out well tonight,” said Hawks Head Coach John Glorioso. “We had so good wins and wrestled hard for the most part. There’s a few thigs we can do better like wrestling from the bottom so we will work on that, but of course I’m happy with the win.”
It didn’t take long for the Hawks to jump ahead 6-0 when Ryan Gura pinned Sebastian Wrobel just 45-second into the opening match at 182-pounds.
Kaivin Robles extended the lead for Bartlett with his 13-4 Major decision over Dorien Vasquez at 195-pounds.
Fenton grabbed their first win of the dual behind the fall by Dan Martinez over Yazan Aburmishan at 3:41 of the second period in the 220-pound match.
At 285, it looked like Fenton would grab another victory with Thomas Klos dominating and nearly pinning Sam Mancilla,,jumping out to a 5-0 lead but Mancilla came back strong and gained a fall at 3:46 to up the Bartlett lead to 16-6.
Emma Engels gained a forfeit at 106 that gave the Hawks a 22-6 advantage.
With the 9-2 decision, Max McCaan added to the Bartlett lead with the win over Anthony Bingham, moving the lead to 25-6.
Senor Hawk wrestler, Ryan Richey made short work of Fentons’ Allen Pacheco at 120-pounds a Fall in 59-secomds worked out just how Richey likes them.
“I really like matches like that, short and sweet, I prefer them, said Richey. “You go in there and get in some work, get it done and not put in much effort in getting the win. I think I’m getting better as the season goes on and looking forward to the next match.”
With a substantial lead, the Hawks looked in total control as the Bison didn’t put up much of a fight in the first seven bouts.
Fenton has a history of having some of the best wrestlers in the area, but youth and inexperience has really put the Bison in a rebuilding mode the last few seasons.
Bartletts’ Yuva Patel added the Hawks second Major win with his dominating 15-3 win over Kris Nogueda.
Fenton added falls at 132 and 138 and 145-pounds. Josh Dickeson was in control throughout his match against Bartletts’ Filip Szeszko.
Deceptive in his strength, Dickeson used it to his advantage, powering to four takedowns, eventually gaining the fall at 5:21.
“I don’t really think I use my strength to get wins but I do feel strong,“ said Dickeson. I’m just staying focused on what I do and want to do during the match.
Dickenson’s fall was followed up by Alberto Bracamontes fall of Hawks’ Nick Barton at 5:42 which now had the Bartlett lead at 35-18.
It got closer after another Fenton fall at 145-pounds. Interestingly, Omar Diaz one mistake nearly cost him a match he dominated from the whistle.
Getting sloppy from the top position had him reversed and on his back to end the second period. I good wake up call for him. He answered soon after when he quickly turned Farhan Chowdhury, pinning him at 4:17 of the third period.
The Hawks lead was now at 35-24.
Zain Yassob was all over Fentons’ Brayman Amaya, scoring as much as he wanted, finally ending the bout with a fall at 5:31 and a 41-24 lead.
At 160-pounds, Bisons’ Jovany Zuniga grabbed a fall of Gerald Amistoso mid-way through period two at 3:02, cutting the Hawk lead to 41-30
The final bout of the evening saw Bartletts’ Elijas Vargas finish off the Bisons with a fall over Nicholas Ohanian at 5:28 ending the evening with the Hawks winning 47-30.
“Obviously, we would have liked different results, the last two nights we’ve lost a lot of close matches,” said Bison Head Coach Brain Hastings. “We felt a lot of matches could have gone different like tonight. But they’re getting better , every couple days they’re getting noticeably better.
