NEW LENOX—The final whistle brought a difficult end to the Chicagoland Pop Warner 7U season opener for the Illinois Jr Celtics, falling 6-0 to the Orioles Park Falcons on August 22 In New Lenox.
Despite the loss, Celtics head coach David Brunette remained optimistic about what his team can build on throughout the season.
“It’s been a rough summer so far practicing, weather-wise. We came together today and we gave it our all and everything that goes planned, got something to work on. Come out next week, fired up.”
The Jr. Celtics showed flashes of defensive toughness throughout the game, consistently making stops and limiting the Falcons’ scoring opportunities. Offensively, however, the Celtics struggled to find the end zone despite several promising drives.
From the opening play, the Celtics’ defense set the tone with strong tackles from Liam Mann and Anthony Stazzone III.
With three minutes remaining in the first quarter, Mack Simon continued the defensive momentum with a crucial tackle that stopped a Falcons offensive push and forced a punt.
“I felt great,” said Simon. “I was thinking about making a really big tackle. So I just ran full speed and basically dived for it.”
The Jr. Celtics then looked to generate momentum on offense. With two minutes remaining in the opening quarter, Jack Brogan connected with Mann on a 10-yard pass that moved the needle for a Celtics first down.
“I had confidence in myself and I just did the best I could and I just threw it to him,” Brogan said of the completion to Mann.
One minute later, Brogan connected with Greyson Berger for another positive play, this time resulting in a five-yard gain. Despite those offensive flashes, neither team was able to find the end zone as the first quarter ended scoreless.
The second quarter followed a similar pattern, with the Jr. Celtics’ defense continuing to make plays while the offense searched for consistency.
Within the opening seven minutes of the quarter, the Celtics attempted to establish the run, with Stazzone III picking up seven yards. However, the drive stalled on fourth down, forcing the Jr. Celtics to turnover on downs.
With five minutes remaining in the first half, Jamari McDonald Jr. delivered a big tackle to prevent what appeared to be a potential Falcons touchdown.
Three minutes later, Brogan came up with another crucial defensive stop, making a tackle just short of, to keep the Falcons out of the end zone.
“I felt like all I had to really do was just run as fast as I could and just push them over. That’s all I really had to do,” Brogan said of the tackle.
With two minutes remaining in the half, the Falcons’ offense finally broke through and scored the game’s opening touchdown, putting the Jr. Celtics behind 6-0.
Mokenas’ defense immediately responded. Charles Buche III made a big tackle on the extra-point attempt, keeping the Falcons from adding another point and preserving the 6-0 score.
“I came in and did my job. I thought I could really tackle him, and I did,” Buche said.
With two minutes remaining in the half, the Celtics’ offense attempted to mount a scoring drive and tie the game. Brogan connected with Berger for a five-yard gain before adding three yards on a strong individual run. As the clock approached 40 seconds, Brogan found Mack Simon for another Jr. Celtics first down.
On the final play of the half, Brogan attempted to make a run but was brought down by the Falcons’ defense, sending the Celtics into halftime trailing 6-0.
Coach Brunette pointed to the offensive line as one of the team’s biggest challenges during the opening half.
“We were struggling with the offensive line a little, and it was hard to overcome. In the first game, a lot of these boys are in different positions. They’re not aware of what’s going on yet. Just working out the game still.”
The second half continued to feature strong defensive performances from the Jr. Celtics, while the offense continued searching for openings against the Falcons’ defense.
During the opening three minutes of the third quarter, Brogan attempted to create opportunities with the ball but struggled to break through the Falcons’ defensive front.
With four minutes remaining in the quarter, the Jr. Celtics finally generated another offensive spark. Brogan broke free for a 17-yard run, moving the chains and giving his team a first down.
“I just tried to keep my balance and just try to keep walking forward and just see how many yards I can get,” Brogan said.
The host continued to push for an equalizer, but the Falcons’ defense continued to close down running lanes and passing opportunities, eventually forcing another turnover.
The Jr. Celtics’ defense once again stepped up nearing the conclusion of the third stanza.
Mann continued to make an impact with his tackling, delivering a key tackle that resulted in a significant loss for the Falcons and kept the game at 6-0 heading into the final quarter.
“So I got really angry, ran hard, and then I just sprinted to make the tackle,” Mann said of the play.
The Jr.Celtics entered the fourth quarter looking to build off their defensive momentum while searching for an offensive answer. Midway through the quarter, Kaleb Neylon delivered another strong tackle as the Jr. Celtics continued to battle for possession and an opportunity to tie the game.

“I really tried to keep my balance and keep walking forward and just see how many yards I can get,” Brogan said of his second-half rushing effort.
The Jr. Celtics continued to search for an offensive breakthrough in the final minutes. Brogan connected with Caleb Mueller on another promising play, but the Falcons’ defense continued to make stops and eventually forced another turnover on downs.
Nearing the en of the game, the Jr. Celtics’ defense returned to the field looking to give the offense one more opportunity. Tietz and Stazzone III contributed with key tackles as the Cthey continued to battle until the final whistle.
Ultimately, the defensive effort was not enough to overcome the offensive struggles, as the Illinois Jr Celtics 7U fell 6-0 to the Orioles Park Falcons in their season opener.
Despite the result, Coach Brunette believes the loss can serve as motivation for the young Celtics moving forward.
“It just lit a fire under their butt,” Brunette said. “It’s just a little attitude adjustment.”
Several players stepped up with important tackles and offensive contributions, giving the Celtics plenty to build on as they prepare for their next matchup. Those players included: Troy Angus, Greyson Burger, Patrick Brennan, Vincenzo Brunette, Charles Buche III, Santos Candia, Cody Crites, Jack Hamstra, Clifford Kouba, Roch Kouba, Oliver Liang, Henry McLaren, Liam Regan, Jack Sawyer, and Augustyn Urso.
The Celtics cheerleading team also provided strong support throughout the game despite the final score. Led by Stacey Cercone, the cheerleading squad helped bring energy and encouragement to the sidelines throughout the contest. Esposito, Olivia P. Palacios, Olivia P. Price, Olivia M. Martino, Peyton Roscetti, Rose Jones, and Vivian Mann.
