IC Catholic Grapplers Dominate Wheeling Regional

With a dominant performance on the mats, the IC Catholic Prep matmen let everyone know they are a force to be reckon with in this years IHSA 2A Wrestling State Tournamnet.

Under the tutelage of Coach Danny Alcocer and some added transfer talent, the Knights would go on to capture 11 Regional Championships in Arlington Heights at the Forest View Educational Center, which hosted this year’s 2A Wheeling Regional.

Among its Champions was the IHSA 2A top ranked Michael Calcagno at 285, along with second-ranked wrestlers, Deven Casey at 120; Joe Gliatta at 165 and Foley Calcagno at 190.

The Knights prevailed over second place Deerfiled by more than one hundred point difference. IC scored 268.5 points, Deerfield was runner-up with 161.5 followed by Wheeling at 158.5 and Fenton with 123.5

Dominic Pasquale (23-14) of IC Catholic looks to headlock David Perez (20-5) of Wheeling during their 106-pound Regional Championship. Pasquale prevailed, 7-2.

Kannon Judycki (22-14) of IC Catholic (top) looks to turn Frankie Katz (19-10) of Wheeling during their 113 Championship. Judycki won by Fall at 3:50.

Deven Casey (27-4) of IC Catholic takes Adrian Cohen (33-9) of Deerfield to his back and wins the 120 title by Fall in 2:22.

Luke Reddy (38-2) gives Deerfield (L) its first regional title when he pinned Max Katz (22-14) of Wheeling in :49 seconds at 126-pounds.

Acrobatics were on display in the 132 Championship. Omar Samayoa (24-14) of IC Catholic and Jackson Palzet (18-3) of Deerfield were entertaining in Samayoa’s 11-7 win.

Bryson Spaulding (28-10) of IC Catholic gets in deep on the legs of Deerfields’ Jordan Rasof (33-6) in the 138-pound title bout. Spaulding won with a 6-2 decision.

IC Catholic’s Pat Mullen (19-7) tries to fight of the takedown attempt of Deerfields’ Mark Martinez (25-2) during the 144-pound Championship. Mullen prevailed 11-6.

Brody Kelly (27-6) of IC Catholic makes short work of Wheelings’ Nicholas Montesinos (27-15) in the 150 Title bout. Kelly won by Fall in 1:37.

It took just :26 seconds for Seth Digby (35-2) of Lake Forest to capture the 157 title with a Fall of Wheelings’ John Scanlon (20-19).

Joe Gliatta (34-6) of IC Catholic has a half in deep on Ilia Dvoriannikov (26-5) of Vernon Hills. Gliatta went to gain a Fall in 4:59 for the 165 Championship.

Nate Brown (6-10) of IC Catholic finds himself on his back in his 175 title bout against Rulin Palacios (27-9) of Fenton, surprisingly, Brown managed to win by Fall in 5:50.

Foley Calcagno (29-6) of IC Catholic (top) took the 190 title with a win by Fall in 2:19 over Phu Truong (28-13) of St. Viator.

Michael Calcagno (44-4) of IC Catholic captures his schools 11th Championship after dispatching Yaree Sandifer (34-12) of Lake Forest by Fall in :15 seconds.

Thomas Klos (19-6) of Fenton cruised through the Regional pinning his way to the 285 title. Here he has Pablo Morales (20-17) of Wheeling on his back for the Fall in :47 seconds.
